Ministry and Pastoral Counseling - Drawn to the dichotomy of spirit and the physical universe since childhood, Richard commenced formal ecumenical studies in 1977. He is a student of both Western and Eastern spiritual paths.

"To understand one another, a few things are essential: first, a willingness to learn, and next, letting go of fixed ideas, prejudices, and conclusions made without benefit of communication."        RVW

"The most basic and powerful way to connect to another is to listen."       Rachel Naomi Reman

I want to express my appreciation for the assistance Richard Vanceunebrouck-Werth provided in a recent family crisis. My wife and I arrived in Seattle from New Zealand, facing an immense family tragedy. Richard was recommended to help us cope with both the grief of the situation and the practical aspects of dealing with a sudden death. It is hard to express through words my gratitude for the compassion and expertise he gave us.

He met with us many times over the course of a few weeks, showing great empathy and patience. Even while we were in the midst of this grief, he helped us to re-affirm love and understanding for our brother who passed away, and provided a safe place for us to connect with other family members who wanted to support us with their love.

He continued to provide kindness and counseling  as he led us through the process of dealing with the aftermath of an untimely death, including determining the atmosphere and intent of the memorial, which was so painful for us to plan.  I and many others at the memorial Richard conducted felt it was the most meaningful they had ever attended.

In addition to his assistance with choosing words and music for the memorial, he lent his own professional expertise to enhance the power of the musical pieces that meant so much to my brother during his life. Richard Werth's eulogy to my brother was thoughtfully composed and presented.

We deeply appreciate what Richard has done for us. He has become a good friend and a source of strength and understanding for our family. We feel as if we have gained a brother, so strong was the connection we felt with him, and so powerful was the compassion he showed for us.

I went through the end of a relationship and the death of my mother in June. I had unresolved issues, and needed some help in dealing with them. Rev. Richard Vanceunebrouck-Werth spent a lot of time with me, listening to me and providing his insight and advice. I'm not "all better," as it will take some time to get over my grief, but I appreciated Rev. Werth's professional counsel.

I have the honor of being both a friend of Richard Werth and a recipient of his knowledge and compassion. Recently, my family suffered a loss that was devastating. Richard brought great comfort to each member of the family. He has the ability to meet people where they are, spiritually and emotionally, and then formulate his communication with them in a way they can understand.

Richard is able to interact in a clear and patient way, even with those who may be distraught and angry. I admire his determination to never give up on anyone who may need him, in spite of obstacles. I am inspired by his love of humanity, his willingness to go out of his way if someone needs help, and his commitment to doing good in the world.

I would highly recommend him to any family going through loss or grief, or anyone who needs a compassionate pastoral counselor.

His expertise in dealing with the difficult practical matters of the aftermath of death was also essential to my family, as people in stressful situations need assistance in balancing practical needs with spiritual and emotional ones. He is able to guide people back to a place of calm and assurance.

On a daily basis, he looks for ways to help others, even strangers. In a recent example I witnessed, he assisted someone who desperately needed substance abuse intervention. Many of us see people like this every day who need help of some kind, and most of us, most of the time, will only help when it fits in with that moment in our lives: i.e., are we in a "giving" mood, do we feel like helping, do we have the means at the moment, is it convenient to do so.

Because service towards others is such a high priority for Richard, he doesn't ask himself whether he is in the "right mood" to help someone...he just tries to do it. If the world had more people like this, it would be a far better place.
